MINDEN — The Class C-1 preseason No. 1 Minden girls basketball team faced its first ranked opponent of the season on Monday, taking on No. 6 Boone Central/Newman Grove. But that didn’t stop the Whippets from putting on yet another dominating performance.

A big third quarter propelled Minden to a 68-39 victory over the Cardinals to improve the Whippets to 8-0.

Minden head coach Rick Chramosta said it was his team’s second-half defense that opened the door for Minden’s 25-point explosion in the quarter, which saw Minden turn a 29-21 advantage into a 54-29 lead.

“I thought (defensive intensity) was something that we’ve lacked throughout the year,” Chramosta said. “We’ve kind of had a roller coaster — we haven’t been able to put four good quarters together. I thought it was our defensive effort. We just lose focus and intensity. But I thought, especially the second half, our defense was good, and that’s going to keep you in any ballgame.”
