Faces of Sports: Howard Sheley

Hastings High head wrestling coach Howard Sheley celebrates
during the 1988 state meet

Fate has left two burning "what if" questions lingering in the mind of Howard Sheley.

Sheley's wrestling teams at Hastings High posted a 176-68-1 record after winning just one match during his first two seasons at the helm. That record includes a Class A state title in 1988, the school's first major sport crown in 34 years at the time, 14 Top 10 finishes at state; eight district champions or runners-up; 12 conference champions or runners-up; 205 individual state qualifiers, and 89 state medalists.

His induction into the Nebraska Scholastic Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1997 was all but automatic. He continues to share his knowledge of the sport with wrestlers at Hastings College, where he serves as a volunteer assistant coach under Shawn Kelley.
