Violin sharing program meets needs in elementary system

Daphne Rodela laughs as she tries out the bow on her violin
for the first time Thursday afternoon at Alcott Elementary.

For Jim and Lynn Kaiser, there is no greater joy than that of watching a young student find the thrill in playing a musical instrument.

"We've got such a passion for kids," Lynn said Tuesday. "It's always been our goal: As many kids as want to should be able to play. And it's been proven it does help with their studies."

As instrumental music teachers in the Hastings Public Schools elementary system, the Kaisers expose fourth- and fifth-grade students to band and orchestra.

But with more than 200 fourth- and fifth-graders already involved in the program in which they take home a rented instrument, many students go on a waiting list for instrument rentals.

"We're always having to tell kids, 'We ran out of instruments,' " Lynn said.
