SMITH CENTER, Kan. — Members of the Smith Center High School Scholars Bowl team make their principal nervous — and he says the 11 other teams competing in the 2A Kansas state meet today have reason to be nervous, as well.

Before the team's first-place finish at the Feb. 2 regional competition, Principal Greg Koelsch made the bet with team members that he would shave his hair into a Mohawk if the team won the state title.

"We've got a real solid team, and before regionals I knew they had a good chance of making it to state and competing very well," he said. "Just for incentive I told them I would do that. After their regional showing, I told their coach I'm getting a little nervous."
