Brandon Oatman is right on target as he sinks a putt from
short range during a practice round at the disc golf course
at Lake Hastings Monday afternoon.
What began as a casual round of disc golf with friends less than two years ago has evolved into a "Roc"-solid hobby of Hastings High School junior Brandon Oatman.
The 16-year-old has taken to the sport in much the same way the Canada geese flock to Lake Hastings during migration season, launching discs that soar accurately toward their mark. Armed with a bag of 23 specialty discs with such intimidating names as Roc, Aviar, Thunderbird and Destroyer, Brandon has mastered precisely the behaviors of each, enabling him to throw over, under and around whatever obstacles present themselves on the course.
Frequenting area courses in Hastings and Kearney's Cottonmill Park, he has elevated his game to a level that has earned him a sponsorship by Volo Disc Sports in Lincoln and several first-place finishes at tournaments across the Midwest. He frequently finishes among the top five in tournament play, competing mostly at the advanced and intermediate division levels.
Brandon's first tournament of 2013 will be the fourth annual Ice Bowl fundraiser at Lake Hastings on Feb. 23.
