Timers ticked. Thumbs poised, prepared to pounce. Buzzers buzzed.
But despite the fast-paced, competitive nature of the ESU 9 elementary Quiz Bowl tournament Tuesday, the attitude among the competitors was a friendly friction.
Take, for example, the quiz bowl teams from Juniata Elementary.
In the month leading up to the bowl, the fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade members of the school's two quiz bowl teams had done a lot of practicing against one another in order to prepare for the real deal.
They didn't anticipate that they would come head-to-head again in competitive play.
"It's weird. It will be just like when we practice," said Mollie Kubicka, just before she and her fellow Juniata fourth- and fifth-graders faced the Juniata sixth-graders in what ended up being a 35-30 win to the younger team.
