DESHLER — Members of the Deshler Sports Boosters took a challenge from the Deshler Board of Education and ran with it.

Beginning in July 2011, booster club members began raising money to purchase new bleachers that would replace the old wooden ones original to the gymnasium that was built in 1962.

“We wanted to take this on as a project,” said Michelle Dubbert, co-leader of the booster club and Deshler third-grade teacher. “When the board realized we were serious about raising money, they agreed to come up with half the money for the bleachers if we would come up with half.”

That agreement was reached in spring 2012 to split the $80,000 total cost for new bleachers as long as the boosters could raise the other half by July 2013. The boosters had that much raised by December 2012.

The final amount raised was more than $42,000.
