St. Michael's students bone up on hospital cleanliness

Libby Landgren, 8, holds her hair up so Shaye Butler can
help her put on a surgical cap while the St. Michael's third-
graders learned about surgery at Mary Lanning
Healthcare Wednesday morning.

Nine-year-old Ashley Wolfe sat on the side of a Mary Lanning Healthcare hospital bed as a nurse checked her blood pressure and pulse oximetry readings.

All of Ashley's classmates from the third grade at St. Michael's Elementary watched in wonder as she underwent the series of tests.
Ashley's exam was all part of surgical experience the students undertook as part of a hospital tour Wednesday.

Surgery nurse Jenni Perches started the presentation by talking about germs and the need to keep a surgical room as germ-free as possible.

The students all agreed that hand washing with soap and water for two minutes can seem like an eternity, but Perches said that's nothing compared to what she has to do.
