Big beam crosses Burlington before 6 a.m.

An impressive, 55-foot-long steel archway was transported across town and installed at the new Russ’s Market near Burlington Avenue and Seventh Street early this morning, creating a spectacle for early-morning commuters.

Weighing in at more than 5,200 pounds, the archway is the largest structure ever assembled in the shop at Kully Pipe and Steel in Hastings, which is providing all the steel work for the project.

“This is by far the biggest one-piece structure we’ve ever done in our shop,” said company president Jeff Kully. “If we had been anywhere but Hastings, we would have had to transport the structure in pieces. But we definitely had a local advantage today.”
