I
School's open; parents ticked

Eighth-graders Bailey Gragg (left) and Zane Bender walk
toward the building at Hastings Middle School Friday
morning. Though Gragg had a ride, Bender waked to school
and thought the cold temperatures were more of a problem
than the snow.

More than a hundred parents, students, Hastings Public Schools staff members and others left a variety of colorful comments on the district's Facebook page Thursday night into this morning after HPS announced it would have classes today.

There were comments of ire and anger, stating that the district was forcing children to walk to school in the snow while parents were forced to dig through the drifts of snow to unbury their vehicles.

"So CCC closed, AC closed.... but it's safe for our 'little' children to go to school?," one parent wrote. "This is sad. Guess I'll wake up at 4am to start shoveling out my driveway, and hopefully get my kids to school on time!!!"

Adams Central Public Schools, Central Community College-Hastings and Hastings College were all closed, while Hastings Public Schools and Hastings Catholic Schools both held classes after nearly 10 inches of snow fell in the city.

Within two hours of HPS' post at 8:22 p.m. announcing that school would be open today "if anything goes according to plan" because "it looks like it will be safe for students to attend school tomorrow," there were comments — most upset with the district's decision to hold classes.
