Dale White of North Platte competes in the Frozen Lake
Hastings Ice Bowl disc golf tournament Saturday.
Participants in the fourth annual Frozen Lake Hastings Ice Bowl disc golf tournament Saturday got exactly what they signed up for.
Some of the competitors carefully shuffled onto the lake to retrieve discs that otherwise would've been lost.
"I think it's lucky we waited a week and didn't do it the week prior because there wouldn't have been anybody walking on the ice then," tournament organizer Steve Stump of Grand Island said. "I think they're all smart enough not to walk out there if they think they're going to fall through."
Attendance at the tournament was down this year, 18 participants compared to 25 the year before. Stump attributes the decrease to the storm Thursday that dumped about 10 inches of snow on Hastings.
It wasn't the Ice Bowl with the most snow, though. Stump said that in 2010 drifts were so high at Lake Hastings snow reached the bottom of the tee baskets on some holes — about 2 1/2 feet.
