Tim and Lori Farmer will be watching this morning as their
daughters, Shanelle (4) and Shandra, take to the court
during the opening round of the state tournament in
Lincoln. Shanelle, a senior, suffered a broken leg at the end
of the 2011-2012 season and her return to the game has
been something of a family effort.
It took almost a year for Shanelle Farmer's broken leg to heal enough so she could play basketball again.
It was at the end of the regular season on Feb. 7, 2012, when St. Cecilia's 5-foot-7 guard leaped up to cash in on what looked like an easy basket. Instead, landing on a defender's foot on the way down, she cracked her left fibula, ending her junior season on a painful note.
Her senior season didn't begin until a month ago because of that same injury.
That's why when Shanelle stepped onto the court this morning for round one of the Class C-2 girls state basketball tournament against Sutton at Lincoln East, she hoped it was the start of something her broken fibula prohibited her from doing last year: Help her team win another state championship.
Perhaps indirectly, her injury derailed the Hawkettes from a chance to defend their 2011 state title. With Shanelle on the sidelines, St. Cecilia was eliminated by Minden, 46-43, in last year's subdistrict final Feb. 16 at Hastings College.
