Despite the frigid weather Tuesday night, the Kearney Bearcats (7-11) found some hot shooting inside the Hastings High gym as they defeated the Tigers 72-53.
The Bearcats jumped out to a 20-9 first quarter lead and held on to lead 32-25 at the half. Kearney junior Peyton Pocock had 12 first-half points and Bryan Burchell came off the bench and nailed two 3-pointers as the Bearcats were shooting well from around the field.
Hastings went on a 7-0 run with three minutes left in the second quarter to cut the Bearcat lead to 25-20. Freshman Vinny Schmidt started the second quarter with a 3-pointer and ended the half on a 3-pointer while 6-foot, 5-inch junior Addison Belau had seven points in between to cut the deficit to seven heading into the second half.
