St. Cecilia's Shanelle Farmer and Sutton's Maria Van Kirk go
after a loose ball Thursday in Sutton.
SUTTON — For the first three minutes, the matchup between the Class C-2 No. 3 St. Cecilia and Class C-2 No. 9 Sutton girls basketball teams looked everything like a top-10 battle.
Sutton senior Maria Van Kirk stepped back and hit a 3-pointer midway through the first quarter, giving the Fillies a 7-6 lead.
Then things changed quickly.
Van Kirk's 3 would end up being the last point for Sutton (15-7) until the four minutes remained in the third quarter. In that span of just more than 16 minutes, the Hawkettes (18-4) scored 37 unanswered points to develop a 43-7 lead en route to posting a 58-29 win.
The Hawkettes — winners of nine straight — have earned the No. 1 seed in the C2-9 subdistrict tournament at Sandy Creek, which starts Monday. STC will face the winner of the play-in game between Nebraska Christian (10-8) and Doniphan-Trumbull (3-16) Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Despite the loss, the Fillies still earned the top rank in the C2-2 subdistrict at Norris. The team will face either Thayer Central (4-13) or Tri County (2-18) next Tuesday at 6 p.m.
