LINCOLN — Realistically, Hastings High wrestling coach Brian Laux thought qualifying seven wrestlers for state would be a good day.

He left Saturday's Class A, District 2 meet at Lincoln Southeast High School pleasantly surprised.

The Tigers qualified eight wrestlers for this week's state tournament and placed fourth with 112.5 points at a district that featured two of the top three teams in the state according to the Nebraska Scholastic Wrestling Coaches Association rankings.

"I'm real pleased," Laux said. "The last few weeks our kids have just continued to improve. It was a very tough district, and our kids battled.

"Going in, I thought five to seven (state qualifiers). Seven would be a good day. I'm just really proud of how they competed."
