Thayer Central's Dalton Kenning wrestles Alma's Calvin
Webster in their 145-pound match of the Red Cloud/Blue Hill
Invitational Jan. 26 in Red Cloud.
Experience can go a long way for any athlete in any sport. But there are few venues where that experience matters more than at the state wrestling tournament.
The Thayer Central wrestling team qualified five wrestlers for the state tournament, which begins at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha. Three of those wrestlers — 138-pounder Clayton Hintz, Dalton Kenning (145) and Cody Krula (152) — have been there before and know what to expect once they arrive in Omaha.
Thayer Central head coach Brett Larson hopes their experience from last year will benefit more than themselves. He's hoping Thayer Central's remaining two qualifiers will learn something from the returners.
"Being a returning state qualifier is always going to help you, and it's also going to help Jamie (Lange) and Jadyn (Dightman) as well," Larson said. "They're going to have questions and have somebody to talk to and be like, 'Hey, this is what you're going to see.' If I say it, it's a little bit different, but if a fellow teammate says it, it sinks in a little bit more."
