OMAHA
— Hastings High wrestler Nolan Laux said he wanted to be more consistent in his first match of the Class A state tournament. The sophomore said he tends too come out slow in the opening match.

That wasn't the case in Laux's first-round match of the state tournament this morning.

Laux, the top-ranked 106-pounder in Class A who finished third at the same weight class at last year's state tournament as a freshman, cruised through the first two periods, building an 12-2 lead en route to an 18-6 major decision for the Tigers.

"I thought Nolan wrestled real well the first two periods and then tried to coast through the third," Hastings High coach Brian Laux said.

Nolan Laux, who improved to 40-0 on the season, said coming into the tournament he knew there would be a target on his back after placing third in last year's state tournament — an experience he feels helped prepare him for Thursday's opening match.

"It definitely helps that I came here last year," he said. "I'm a little more confident in this arena."

Following Laux's match, Brandon Kile (113) took on Class A, District 3 champion and returning state medalist Jonah Navarrete of North Platte. Kile controlled the match earning a 4-0 victory.
