The first time Silver Lake and Kenesaw met, early in the season, it was all Silver Lake in a 63-26 win.
The second time the Twin Valley Conference girls basketball rivals faced off, in the TVC tournament earlier this month, Silver Lake escaped with a 46-42 victory.
For much of Thursday’s Class D-1, Subdistrict 4 final at St. Cecilia’s Chapman Gymnasium, with both teams’ season on the line, the teams were neck and neck.
But the Mustangs pulled away in the second half, downing Kenesaw 49-35 to move one win away from the state tournament.
“They’ve improved a tremendous amount,” Silver Lake coach Keith Crowe said of Kenesaw. “Their young girls are getting a lot better. That’s a credit to them. ... I knew it was going to be a tough battle, but at the end of the game I thought we handled the pressure so much better.”
