OMAHA — One match after collecting his 100th career victory, Adams Central's Derek Lonowski was hit with his fifth loss of the season in the Class B semifinals at the state wrestling tournament Friday night.
Lonowski went into the final period trailing 3-1 to Alliance's Tyson Dowler, but made it a one-point match in the first 10 seconds with an escape. But Dowler, who is undefeated on the season, was too much for the Patriot wrestler and captured a 3-2 decision.
"We wrestled well. We got beat by a superior opponent, and we had our chances," Adams Central head coach Dan Lonowski said. "We had a bear hug locked up, and (Dowler) just moved his hips right and we couldn't get it. ... We get that, we may be able to ride him out for the win, but sometimes it doesn't work out."
Dan Lonowski doesn't think the loss will affect his son's mentality going into the consolation semifinals match today, starting at 9:30 a.m. Lonowski will be facing a tough opponent in John Essink of Syracuse.
Also competing in the consolation semifinals for AC will be Tyler Joseph (138). The senior had a close consolation quarterfinals match with Plattsmouth's Jamar Jones, but Joseph emerged victorious in a 3-2 decision to guarantee himself a medal.
