OMAHA — Going into the final three weight classes, there was only one victorious Class C Tribland wrestler in either the semifinal or the consolation quarterfinal matches. But the final three area wrestlers closed Friday night's session of the state tournament with a bang.
Kenesaw/Shelton's Michael Duffy, a 195-pounder, and Fillmore Central's Zach Ekeler (285) both won their semifinal matches in dramatic fashion. Ekeler's teammate, Trevor Adams (195), continued to battle his way through the consolation bracket after losing the first match of the tournament.
Duffy's opponent, Madison's Trent Wagner, outscored him 5-2 in the second period after a scoreless first. Nearly a minute into the third, Duffy earned a point for an escape to get within 5-3. With 33 seconds remaining, the K/S grappler took down Wagner and added a two-point near fall to capture a 7-5 decision.
"That was one of the toughest matches I've ever wrestled," Duffy said. "When you're down like that, you just have to find it within yourself. God's blessed me with so many abilities, I was able to dig down for it."
