Tigers lose after ‘awkward’ finish

AURORA — An awkward, confusing end to the Aurora vs. Hastings boy’s basketball game allowed the Huskies (10-10) to escape their homecourt with a 43-42 win Saturday.

Trailing 43-40, Tigers’ freshman guard Vinny Schmidt hit a layup in traffic with 6.5 seconds remaining. Out of timeouts, the Tigers immediately put pressure on the ensuing inbounds play. The Huskies inbounded the ball, when Schmidt intercepted the pass. Schmidt got back in the lane, missed the shot and the ball bounced around untouched inside the paint as the buzzer sounded.

It happened right in front of the Hastings’ (7-12) bench. Tigers’ head coach, Lance Creech, believed a foul was called on Schmidt’s put back, as did his players.
