OMAHA — On Saturday, two Tribland wrestlers competed in the Class C state finals. Kenesaw/Shelton's Michael Duffy and Fillmore Central's Zach Ekeler went into the championship round facing tough opponents at the CenturyLink Center.
Duffy, a 195-pound junior, faced defending 182-pound champion in Aquinas Catholic's Austin Svoboda, while the 285-pound senior Ekeler took on last year's heavyweight champion Clayton Lange of Ord.
Duffy was defeated 12-2 and Ekeler was pinned in the second period.
Though they did not win the gold, both wrestlers became an important part in their respective programs' growth.
"Anytime we get kids down here and get a medal, it helps the program," said Fillmore Central head coach Ryan Komenda, whose team has had a wrestler in the finals for two consecutive years after Luke DeLong won a title last year. "We have four or five sophomores that are a good bunch for us and some juniors and seniors coming up. The next few years will be promising."
