OMAHA — Franklin's Mack James was hoping to be the Flyers' second state champion in the last seven years — joining his brother Simon, who won in 2007 — but he had a tough task in the finals.
James, a 120-pound junior, was matched up against last year's 106-pound champion in Pender's Mark Dunn, who edged out James in a 1-0 win to claim the Class D state title at the CenturyLink Center Saturday in Omaha.
"I thought it would be more high scoring actually. I thought both guys would be able to score more," Franklin head coach Ryan Hoffman said. "We didn't move much. We didn't get going. The nerves might have affected us a little bit. But, 1-0, we'll take that and we'll see what happens next year."
After a scoreless first period, Dunn escaped from the bottom position with 42 seconds remaining in the second period for the only point of the match.
"I knew he was going to be a tough match. I figured I could pull it off, but it just didn't happen," James said. "It was a good match."
