GENEVA — The Class C-2, Subdistrict 7 semifinals' round contest between No. 2-seeded Sutton and No. 3-seeded Sandy Creek was the third meeting between the two schools this season.
The prior two match ups were split, and the action in Tuesday's first half of play showed just how even the two teams were.
Until late in the second quarter, at least, when the Cougars cracked.
Sandy Creek's offense went absent for nearly 10 minutes, and in that stretch Sutton utilized a dominating 25-0 run to earn a trip back to the subdistrict finals with a 45-30 win.
"We let down the last time we played (Sandy Creek)," said Sutton head coach Monica Smith, whose squad faces top-seeded Superior Thursday night at 7 p.m at Fillmore Central in Geneva. "We wanted to redeem ourselves and our kids took that to heart. For once, instead of backing down in a big game — a rivalry game — our girls went after it."
