Slow start hampers HHS girls in district loss

GRAND ISLAND — A frigid start was too much for Hastings High to overcome.

Fourth-seeded Aurora surged to an 11-2 lead and held the fifth-seeded Tigers without a field goal for the game's first 8 1/2 minutes on its way to a 45-33 victory over Hastings in first-round play of the Class B, District 5 girls basketball tournament Tuesday night at Grand Island Senior High.

Hastings (2-18) missed its first eight shots from the floor before Libby Knapple's basket ended the drought with 7:19 remaining in the second quarter. The Tigers finished at 28.6 percent (10-of-35) shooting from the field.

"We got some good looks, but I don't think we got many second shots, which is what you need when you're not shooting well," Hastings coach Greg Mays said. "When you're playing against a zone, you've got to make them pay by getting second shots and I thought we were a little lazy with our passes and allowed a couple of bad offensive possessions be turned into easy scores for Aurora."
