The Hastings High swim team is gearing up for the state tournament, which begins today with the diving competition. Friday marks the start of the swimming competition, which concludes Saturday. The meet is in Lincoln at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
The Tigers qualified for two relay events — the boys 200-yard freestyle relay and the boys 200 medley relay. Competitors for both teams are juniors Brycen Shea and Aiden Schneider, sophomore Jack Foreman and freshman Johan Vizoso-Marino. The alternates going into the tournament are seniors Lukas Stuker, Nathan Immel and Dustin Warren.
Hastings High head coach Amber Hoffman said overcoming the nerves of the state tournament will be important for the Tigers.
"For the boys, it's very, very nerve-racking for them because they have hard competition that they're up against," Hoffman said. "A lot of the Omaha teams are really, really tough. It's very nerve-racking for them, but if they go in with a strong head, they'll do fine."
Hoffman said the swimmers had a busy week of practice, working on sprints in the pool and sprints outdoors. The Tigers also worked on their relay starts and swim technique.
