Warriors utilize speed, defense to ground Red Hornet offense

It was a case of quickness erasing a height advantage as the Red Cloud girls basketball team beat Heartland Lutheran 32-26 in the Class D-1 6 subdistrict basketball finals Thursday at St. Cecilia.

Giving away 15 points in per game average scoring to the Red Hornets (13-10), the Warriors (11-11) turned it up a notch on defense and on the boards to neutralize the likes of Heartland’s combination of 6-foot- 2 senior Catherine Kowalski (five points), and 6-1 junior Bethany Hollman (six points).

“It was a big win for this group of girls from where we started when we were freshmen and sophomores to where we’re at now,” Red Cloud coach Casey Fangmeyer said. “Now, they’ll be able to go play for a district championship. We’ll see what happens."
