subdistrict 10 final against Kearney Catholic Thursday night.

KEARNEY — Amidst a crowd of more than 1,000 inside Kearney High’s gymnasium, the Class C-1 No. 1 Minden girls basketball team got off to a quick start and then had to hold on to beat No. 2 Kearney Catholic (24-1) 53-46 to capture the C-1, Subdistrict 10 championship Thursday night.

The Whippets (24-0) kept their quest for a perfect season intact, and while both they and the Stars are virtually automatic locks to reach the state tournament regardless of what happens next, they’ll move on to play Grand Island Central Catholic in the district championship Feb. 28.

“We’re the only unbeaten team left in the state, so that’s a great accomplishment at this point,” said Minden’s Jamie Kissinger.
