Sutton heads to state

FRIEND — A year ago, the Sutton girls basketball team won just five games.

On Friday, the Fillies punched their ticket to the state tournament — thanks in large part to their defense.

Sutton used a 17-0 first-half run to take control en route to defeating Palmyra 42-19 in the Class C-2, District 1 final, picking up its 18th win in process.

"For our seniors, in their four years, this is their third head coach. And that's tough," said first-year Sutton head coach Monica Smith, who was an assistant coach for the Fillies last year. "We wanted it for them because they have overcome a lot to get to this point.

"And we wanted it for our younger players. We have one junior and the rest are sophomores and freshmen (besides the four seniors). So we feel like this was a really big step to build for our future as well."
