HHS sending more qualifiers to state

After only taking two relay teams to the state tournament last season, the Hastings High swimming and diving team will be better represented in Lincoln this year.

The Tigers qualified three divers, three relay teams and an individual swimmer in two events this season.

Returning to the state meet will be the 200-yard freestyle relay and the 200-yard medley relay. Seniors Brycen Shea and Aiden Schneider along with junior Jack Foreman and freshman Johan Vizoso-Marino were on the two relay teams from last season. New additions to this year’s state meet lineup are freshmen Tim Thies and Will Parker.

Foreman, Vizoso-Marino and Thies are starting in all three races. Schneider is racing in the 400 and 200 freestyle relays, while Shea is in the 200 medley. Parker is an alternate for all three.

The Tigers have had just one diver qualify for state in the last two years. This season, HHS has three. Senior Jamison Cockrell, junior Kaz Starr-Chavira and sophomore Carlos Roca will be competing in the boys diving competition, which starts Thursday.

Sophomore Katie Fast qualified for two events in the girls swimming competition. She will compete in the 100-yard backstroke and the 100 freestyle.

The state meet kicks off with the girls diving competition Thursday morning. The boys diving starts at about 12:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Swimming events start Friday and conclude Saturday. The preliminary round for the girls session begins Friday at 9 a.m. The boys session starts at 1:30 p.m. Friday.
