FAIRFIELD — Saturday's Class C-2, Subdistrict 9 final paired two teams with similar tendencies. Both St. Cecilia and Doniphan-Trumbull cruised in their semifinal matchups thanks to hot shooting and strong defensive efforts.
At Saturday's end, it was the Bluehawks' defense that prevailed.
St. Cecilia moved within one win of the state tournament with a 56-47 victory over the Cardinals, winning the C2-9 Subdistrict tournament at Sandy Creek. The two teams met earlier in the year, also ending in a St. Cecilia win.
"We've been working really hard on our 2-3 zone all year long, even though we've only played it maybe three times this season," said STC head coach Kevin Asher, whose team improved to 11-13 on the season. "(Doniphan-Trumbull) is such an athletic and talented team you have to take away something, and we were going to live and die by our zone tonight. I thought our kids really put pressure on shots."
