‘Junk defense’ trashes Red Cloud’s subdistrict bid

There was no element of surprise in Red Cloud’s 61-52 loss to the Shelton Bulldogs in the boys D1-6 subdistrict semifinal contest Tuesday night at St. Cecilia High School.

The bottom line: the Bulldogs’ strong defensive play enabled them to pull away from the Warriors early. It wasn’t as though the Warriors, which finished their season 10-9, hadn’t seen what the Bulldogs, 8-14, brought to the table before. Red Cloud beat them soundly, 78-51, on Dec. 20.

This time around, however, Shelton brought a better version of its game plan to the show. And it showed.

“Their defense was good in the first quarter,” Red Cloud coach Jim Eberly said. “We dug ourselves a hole, but a lot of it had to do with their defense.”
