GIBBON — There is no questioning the desire of the St. Cecilia boys basketball team. The Bluehawks simply ran into a better opponent in Monday's Class C-2, District 5 finals.
Southern Valley's Spencer Kucera, a 6-foot-9 senior, was just too much for St. Cecilia on both ends of the court, and the Bluehawks' season came to an end after a 58-38 loss to Southern Valley.
"You have to give Southern Valley a lot of credit. They have a very nice basketball team. We knew that coming in," STC coach Kevin Asher said. "Their 2-3 zone is really tough. You have to shoot really well, pass well and dribble drive well. We just didn't do a good job of doing that early. We got a little caught up in the moment."
St. Cecilia (11-14) was playing from behind virtually all night after being held to just one field goal in the first quarter. Senior Alex Sheehy hit a 3-pointer for the game's first basket nearly two minutes into the first period. That was the only time STC held the lead, as Southern Valley (21-3) closed out the quarter on an 11-0 run for an 11-3 lead.
