MINDEN — When the Doniphan-Trumbull boys basketball team first played St. Cecilia, the Bluehawks' 3-point shooting and their defense won the game. This time, in the Class C-2, Subidstrict 8 finals, the Cardinals returned the favor.
Doniphan-Trumbull allowed just three field goals in the second half en route to a 43-35 victory Thursday in Minden.
The Cardinals' win was the first against St. Cecilia since Dec. 12, 2003, ending a 10-game losing streak.
"We knew it was going to be an emotional, energy-packed gym, and we wanted to use that to our advantage," said Doniphan-Trumbull head coach Steve Hartman. "Defense and hustling takes care of some of the nerves. You can make those plays a lot easier than making a 3-pointer or standing at the free-throw line late in the game. You can go do those things and our kids did that consistently all night."
