The Harvard Cardinals only return one starter from a season ago and despite some inexperience head coach Thad Fields is confident in his teams work ethic and willingness to improve on the fundamentals.
“Our focus has been going back to the basic fundamentals and trying to master those,” Fields said. “Our attitudes have been amazing and the girls have been great at encouraging one another and being great teammates.”
Stand out Ellie Fields is out recovering from her third hip surgery and will miss at least the first part of the season.
Junior Ashley Nierman will be the lone returning starter for the Cardinals this season.
“We’ll only be returning one starter at the beginning of the season, but Ashley has really emerged as a leader for us. She has a phenomenal work ethic and is great at encouraging her teammates,” commented Fields. “Ellie has also been a great vocal leader from the sidelines with our younger girls, helping them develop their fundamentals.”
Senior Bella Roberts and juniors Alyssa Julich and Kylee Strobl all saw varsity time last season and will be expected to contribute this season.
“Bella, Alyssa and Kylee all have varsity experience and we look for them to stop into a larger role for us this season,” Fields said. “Bella is a quick guard who can shoot from the outside and Alyssa and Kylee are aggressive players in the post for us.”
Sisters Miki and Aimee Whetstine-Jones and sophomore MacKenzie Wagner also look to be in the mix this season for the Cardinals.
“We may be inexperienced but we will look to gain confidence and improve throughout the season,” commented Fields.
