Hastings head swimming and diving coach Charles Scribner really put an emphasis on pushing his boys and girls teams in practice over the moratorium break. He put all of the swimmers and divers through rigorous training sessions, knowing they had almost three weeks between competitions.

On Saturday, Hastings had its first meet of the new year, but Scribner didn’t see the kind of energy he had hoped. That changed on Tuesday, when the boys and girls posted plenty of top performances in a dual against Beatrice.

“We had much better swims than we did on Saturday,” Scribner said. “Saturday was our first meet coming off of hard Christmas break training — two weeks of me training them. Saturday, they looked sore and tired, but (Tuesday) was a much better performance. We swam a lot faster. We looked ready to race.”

The Hastings boys cruised to a 125-53 victory in the pool against Beatrice — which is made up of swimmers from Beatrice, Freeman, Norris and Fairbury. The girls team had nine top-two finishes in the 11 swimming events, but it was Beatrice’s depth that led to a 108-77 win.

“We had multiple events where we took 1-2 or 1-2-3 on the guys side, which always helps you win a meet,” the Hastings coach said.

Hastings’ Grant Johnson blew the competition out of the water in the 200-yard freestyle. He finished first in 1 minute, 50.55 seconds, beating second place by 23.07 seconds. Johnson also placed first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 55.65 seconds, beating out teammate Jay Ceperley by 1.13 seconds.

“Grant and Jay in the 100 fly going head-to-head, it really pushed themselves to do their best. They do that in practice on a daily basis, but it counts a little more for bragging rights in a meet,” Scribner said with a smile.

Johnson and Ceperley both helped the team win the 200 freestyle relay (1:32.79) as well as the 400 free relay (3:39.80). Hastings’ 200 medley relay team also took first with a time of 1:48.32, and Ceperley won the 200 individual medley (2:11.56).

Micah Gengenbach won the 50 freestyle (23.24), Jacob Haase placed first in the 100 free (52.60) and the 100 breaststroke (1:08.20), and Andrew Heckman was first in the 500 freestyle race, winning with a time of 5:46.49. Taylor Quig rounded out Hastings’ top-finishes by winning the 100 backstroke (1:02.24).

On the girls side, Morgan Baker continued to shine with a pair of individual first-place finishes. She won the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:02.68, nearly 17 seconds better than second place. She also took first in the 100 fly (1:01.56).

“From the girls, we had solid performances. We took home first place in a lot of races or were in the top three, but Beatrice’s quality of depth was more than we could handle,” Scribner said. “Every race they had people that, if they didn’t win, they were getting second, third and fourth, so they were racking up points that way. But we competed hard. Everybody on the roster swam really well.”

Diana Brailita won the 200 IM (2:24.51) and the 100 freestyle (57.32), and the 400 free relay team took first place with a time of 4 minutes, 0.75 seconds. Hayde Stephenson (2:19.36, 200 free), Kara Kennard (1:12.62, 100 backstroke), and Emma Estrada (1:19.91, 100 breaststroke) all recorded second-place finishes.

Scribner believes both boys and girls teams have plenty of top-level talent that have high goals for the rest of the season.

“They’re making steps every day to get to where they need to be and they have great teammates for support that are pushing each other every day,” the coach said. “It just makes each other better when you have to push yourself to beat your teammate. When you’re doing that on a daily basis, that’s when you get the most improvement.”

Hastings will be back in the pool Friday and Saturday at the Lincoln invite before hosting a dual with Columbus Jan. 23.
