Crashes on county roads like the Sept. 5 collision between a school bus and semitrailer truck southeast of Blue Hill that killed two drivers and two students lead an increase in traffic deaths across the state.
Fatalities on county roads jumped nearly 43 percent in 2012 compared to the previous year. As of Monday, the number of fatalities on county roads increased from 42 in 2011 to 60 in 2012. The totals won’t become official until the end of January in case any injuries sustained in a crash cause death.
State records said the 2012 total as of Monday was 207, compared with 181 in 2011 and 190 in 2010. Of those 26 additional fatalities between 2011 and 2012, 18 happened on county roads.
