The former Salem United Methodist Church building in
Sutton has been reopened in May 2012 as the Allegre
Wolf Arts Center in Sutton.
SUTTON — The doors of Salem United Methodist Church here, built in 1894, officially closed on April 22, 2012, with dwindling membership, but a history of worship, fellowship and voices raised in song.
Those very same doors reopened the following month with a new name and a new voice: Allegro Wolf Arts Center.
Allegro co-founders Scott Schmer and Kelsey Knehans purchased Salem for $1 — a small price for a big dream and a large undertaking.
Schmer and Knehans submitted a proposal, accepted by the United Methodist Nebraska Annual Conference, that the building be used for dual purposes: Promoting the arts in the area and gathering the community for meetings and other events.
