Weather, welds create problems for HU

Hastings Utilities crews have been addressing a variety of problems weather and non-weather related in the past few weeks.

On Dec. 29, 2012, plant operators at Whelan Energy Center Unit 2, a 220-megawatt coal-fired power plant, heard a loud noise coming from the boiler area.

They found several metal tubes that move highly pressurized steam had broken open.

HU Assistant Manager Al Meyer explained the situation to the Board of Public Works during its regular meeting Thursday.
