Then & Now: Hastings High School

This aerial photo shows Hastings High School after it
opened in September 1955.

Then: Members of the Hastings Board of Education devoted a large part of their monthly meeting 60 years ago this month to finalizing details of plans for the new senior high school to be built on the old Adams County Fairgrounds.

Now: A larger-than-life image of legendary Cornhusker football coach Tom Osborne in his Hastings High School basketball uniform hangs above the stairwell at Hastings High School today. That and other photos of Osborne can be seen around campus.

They serve to honor Hastings' favorite son, who also served the state in Congress and more recently as athletic director at University of Nebraska-Lincoln before retiring Jan. 1.

What's interesting about these images is that none of them were taken at the current high school. That's because Osborne never set foot there during his playing days.

"It was open after I left," he recalled. "I was down at the old junior/senior high school, and it opened the fall right after I left."
