St. Michael's students get entertaining lesson on how to avoid flu

With flu season sweeping the country earlier than usual, Scrubby Bear and others are reminding people to wash their hands to prevent the spread of germs.

Scrubby Bear visited the kindergarten classes Friday at St. Michael's School to teach children about washing hands to prevent the spread of germs. The plush man-sized bear with blue overalls and cap is the mascot of one program offered by South Heartland District Health Department.

Desiree Rinne, health education coordinator with the South Heartland District Health Department, started by talking to the children about washing their hands and showing photographs of magnified germs — to their "ohhs," "gross" and other squeamish expressions.
