DAVENPORT — With talk of gun control legislation in the news, residents turned out in droves to secure guns at the third annual Davenport Gun Show Sunday at the community building here.

A record crowd of about 500 people turned out for what event chair Gary Miller said was Davenport Lions Club's largest and best attended show to date. And while it is impossible to know just how much of an effect gun control measures discussed by President Barack Obama in recent weeks had on attendance, Miller said most vendors say they have seen a spike in sales since such talks began.

That's the case for Gordon Halbmeier of Bladen, who has been selling holsters, belts, vests, jackets, and other leather goods at gun shows for more than 20 years. He believes the threat of gun control legislation is driving more people than ever to shows.

"Obama is the best gun salesman we've got," he said. "Gun control is a joke. It's all politics."
