Gertie the duck is safe — minus a few feathers — thanks to the efforts of some Heartwell Park regulars.
After the white duck's underside froze to the surface of the ice Thursday, several Hastings residents took to the ice to rescue the bird, who is known for being a "troublemaker," according to regular Heartwell duck watcher Judy Maughan.
After Judy and husband Ken arrived at the park to feed the ducks, they noticed Gertie was stuck and hoped the fire department could make an ice rescue. They were directed to animal control and told nothing could be done; the duck would be fine come afternoon when the ice melted some.
"I won't be able to sleep tonight with her out there," said Judy, who, along with Ken, has been feeding ducks at Heartwell nearly every day for the last three years.
