Mentors were there for Jason Peter every step of his life from childhood until being drafted into the NFL, and mentoring helped save him.

That was the message the former Husker All-American football player shared at the TeamMates Hastings chapter's annual fundraising dinner Saturday night at the Hastings City Auditorium.

Sitting around tables, about 200 people filled the auditorium to listen to and speak with Peter as well as the man who introduced Peter, and who created the TeamMates mentoring program, Tom Osborne. Both men signed numerous autographs during the event's social hour.

Peter committed to speaking Saturday because he knew he would be helping Tom and Nancy Osborne and the organization they founded.

"After I was already committed to it, I kind of sat back and I thought 'Did I really have a mentor or anything growing up?' Maybe I jumped the gun on this a little bit," he said.
