Hastings resident Scott Pittsey's 4 1/2-year-old son Matthew found some animal tracks Saturday morning and was off and running.

"I found some holes that went way over there," Matthew said.

Those tracks were left in the snow covering corn stubble in the field adjacent to the Prairie Loft Center for Outdoor and Agricultural Learning. Matthew, like many of the more than a dozen young children, was at Prairie Loft for the monthly Family Outdoor Club activity.

The theme for the January program was animals in winter. Before everyone stomped off to explore in the snow, Prairie Loft executive director Amy Sandeen provided a spirited reading of "Over and Under the Snow," which describes the different ways different animals deal with winter.

"I think he paid attention during story time," Scott Pittsey said about his son. "She talked about the different tracks and things they could see. So, I think he was excited to actually see them out there."
