Hastings man donates nearly 20 gallons of blood over 4 decades

Dave Hajny gets the thumbs up from Tranella McCoy of the
American Red Cross as he donates blood Thursday at First
Congregational United Church of Christ.

Growing up, Dave Hajny of Hastings had a great role model for donating blood.

No matter how busy he was with work as an engineer for the 10/11 TV station and other responsibilities, Hajny's father, Emil, always made time to donate blood at the Hastings City Auditorium.

"When I was a little kid, or just growing up, my dad would go to the auditorium four times a year and he was a lot busier than I ever was and worked a lot harder than I ever did," Hajny said. "I thought if he could do it I could do it."

Hajny, a 57-year-old engineer for BNSF Railway, arrived at the First Congregational United Church of Christ Thursday shortly before his 1 p.m. appointment, just like he always does after 56 days — the minimum amount of time allowed between donations.
