Pickup/train collision kills area man

BELVIDERE — An Ohiowa man died early Sunday morning as the result of a pickup-train collision here, the Thayer County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Bryant D. Mussman, 24, had been northbound on D Street when he attempted to cross the Union Pacific railroad tracks at a closed crossing and the pickup became stuck on the tracks.

The pickup then was struck by an eastbound train.

The crash was reported to authorities at 2:34 a.m.

According to The Associated Press, Mussman was engaged to be married, and he is survived by a son, two brothers and his parents.

Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Ohiowa. Farmer & Son Funeral Home in Geneva is handling arrangements.
