The felling of trees Saturday signaled progress in the Russ's Market expansion project.
Best Tree Service of Hastings took down about half the trees on the lot located at Seventh Street and Lexington Avenue, with the rest of the work expected to be completed this week, store director Steve Richardson said this morning. The clearing began a few weeks later than expected, due to the snowstorm on Dec. 19, 2012, that brought plans to a halt, Richardson said.
"Hopefully the mild winter will continue," he said. "We want to break ground sometime in spring. I don't have a firm date at this point."
Lexington Avenue may need to be closed at some point this week, as some of the remaining trees are in close proximity to the street, Richardson said. Utility lines abutting some of the trees also may prove challenging to avoid, he said.
