Then: On an unusually warm New Year’s Day 20 years ago, notoriety was the last thing on Steve and Susan Spongberg’s minds.

They had been told that Dec. 30 was the due date for their second child, so the couple had spent the 1993 holiday season preparing, as well as tending to their then-3-year-old daughter, Courtney.

“My best friend came into town and was ready to stay home with Courtney if I went into labor,” Susan remembers. “I remember spending New Year’s Eve waiting and thinking something would happen.”

Their son Lance wasn't born until the morning of January 2. He was the first baby born at Mary Lanning in 1994.

Now: Lance Spongberg, 20, is a sophomore at Morningside College in Sioux City, hoping to major in education.
