Hastings College's Connor Blanco wrestles Buena Vista's
Seth Shatto in the 157-pound championship match of the
Hastings College Open Saturday at Lynn Farrell Arena.
After going nearly a month without competing, it was finally time for the Hastings College wrestling team to get back on the mats. This time, it was in front of its own crowd at the Hastings Open on Saturday.
Sophomore Connor Blanco led the Broncos with a second-place finish in the 157-pound weight class. Freshman Blake Fruchtl (141) and sophomore Grant Harrill (197) both placed third. Sophomore Alec Chanthapatheth (133) placed fourth, while Tony Blessie (125), Garth Ginder (149) and Calvin Erven finished in sixth place.
"We got accomplished what we needed to accomplish. We needed to get some matches in since it's been three or four weeks since we've competed," HC head coach Shawn Kelley said. "It was good to get back on the mat in a live situation and evaluate where we are and where we need to be in the next eight weeks."
After winning his first two matches, Blanco knocked off University of Nebraska at Kearney wrestler Colton Johnson 7-2 to advance to the championship. But in the finals match, Blanco fell to Buena Vista's Seth Shatto 3-0.
